Mom ‘s Cabbage rolls
1 lb ground meat
3 strips bacon
1 medium onion /minced
¼ c chopped bell pepper
½ c onion tops
1 c uncooked rice
1 egg
1 tsp salt
3 cloves garlic
Pepper to taste
1 cans tomato paste
Mix all ingredients except tomato paste and bacon. Steam 12 large cabbage leave in water for 5 minutes or soft enough to roll. Fill each cabbage leaf with mixture – roll and place in pan, open end down. Add water and cover rolls with tomato paste and bacon. Place in oven on medium 1 to 1 ½ hours.
My Grandmother was always the cook for Cabbage Rolls but with her passing my Mom started making them with her own twist. My Mom is a wonderful cook but before my Grandmother passing she never made them – a few times she tried they came out uneatable. But they are a family favorite and she picked up the recipe and ran with it. My Mom is getting up in age and I guess I need to learn how to make them – Its all about passing the recipe box to the next generation here. Lisa
