National Macaroon Day

1382539568448

What is the difference between a macaroon and a macaron?

Aside from both being delicious and similar in spelling, macarons and macaroonsare entirely different cookies. First off, a macaroon is coconut based, whereas amacaron is meringue based

  • 1 14-ounce package sweetened shredded coconut (about 5 cups)
  • 4 large egg whites
  • ⅔ cups sugar
  • ⅓ cup all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 6 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, melted and cooled to room temperature

In a medium bowl, combine the coconut, egg whites, sugar, flour, salt, and vanilla.

Drop packed tablespoonfuls of the mixture onto parchment-lined baking sheets, spacing them 1 inch apart.

Bake, at  350 –  rotating the baking sheets halfway through, until lightly golden, 25 to 30 minutes. Cool slightly on the baking sheets, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

When cool, dip the bottom of each macaroon in the chocolate and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Refrigerate until firm, 20 to 30 minutes. Store the macaroons in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 7 days.

Happy Water a Flower Day *

So How much water?

Usually when the first inch or so of soil is dry, it’s a good indication that watering is needed. In summer, watering outdoor potted plants is necessary daily (and even twice a day) for most species, especially when temperatures reach over 85 degrees

So I usually water daily but lately we have had rain so less to water.

Now I am not much of a gardener  but My grandmother & parents have great gardens. Now that my parents are getting older we usually plant lots of Bulbs & Seeds and let Nature work .

From the Author

I grew up in the Susquehanna Valley in Pennsylvania and often made visits to Lancaster County.  This area is rich with history, quilts, unique food, and beautiful hand-crafted furniture.  I chose this setting with the fictional town of Willow Creek for my Daisy’s Tea Garden series. I also wanted to incorporate a sense of family.  My sleuth Daisy is a widow with two teenage daughters.  Daisy and her Aunt Iris are partners in running the tea garden.  I hope you find Daisy’s Tea Garden a cozy place with warmth, soup and baked goods that you want to visit often.  Watch for book 3 in my Daisy series in 2019, Murder With Cucumber Sandwiches.

Summer Time * How to combat loss

Tuesday & Hope you had a great 3 day holiday. We are on Summer Break but learning doesn’t stop at our house & I am sure you are the same .

Summer Reading Loss :

On the  average, students’ achievement scores declined over summer vacation by one month’s worth of school-year learning,

(2) declines were sharper for math than for reading, and

(3) the extent of loss was larger at higher grade levels. Importantly, they also concluded that income-based reading gaps grew over the summer, given that middle class students tended to show improvement in reading skills while lower-income students tended to experience loss.

Memorial Day Monday *

It’s Monday Morning & in the United States its Memorial Day . So enjoy your day !

The custom of honoring ancestors by cleaning cemeteries and decorating graves is an ancient and worldwide tradition, but the specific origin of Memorial Day, or Decoration Day as it was first known, are unclear.

In early rural America, this duty was usually performed in late summer and was an occasion for family reunions and picnics. After the Civil War, America’s need for a secular, patriotic ceremony to honor its military dead became prominent, as monuments to fallen soldiers were erected and dedicated, and ceremonies centering on the decoration of soldiers’ graves were held in towns and cities throughout the nation.

After World War I, the day expanded to honor those who have died in all American wars.

Poppies for Remembrance *

Hello Sunday Readers: In the United States we start the second  day of a 3 day weekend. On Monday we celebrate Memorial Day. A Day of Remembrance  of fallen solders.

Have you ever wondered about the poppies given out by American Legion? Or even why poppies?

Field_poppy_-_Papaver_rhoeas_(12190335083)

After World War I, the poppy flourished in Europe. Scientists attributed the growth to soils in France and Belgium becoming enriched with lime from the rubble left by the war. From the dirt and mud grew a beautiful red poppy. The red poppy came to symbolize the blood shed during battle following the publication of the wartime poem “In Flanders Fields.” The poem was written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, M.D. while serving on the front lines.

On September 27, 1920, the poppy became the official flower of The American Legion family to memorialize the soldiers who fought and died during the war. In 1924, the distribution of poppies became a national program of The American Legion.

May 24th was national Poppy Day.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row.

That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
