It’s time for a fun Spring time science experiment : Now that the weather as warmed up its a perfect time to try these:

Blowing up a Balloon with Vinegar and Baking Soda

Add 2 or 3 teaspoons of baking soda to the unfilled balloon.Thoroughly rinse and dry the funnel. Pour 2 or 3 teaspoons of vinegar to the water bottle using the funnel. Attach the balloon to the top of the water bottle, being careful to not let any of the baking soda slip in until you are ready.Quickly tip the vinegar so it mixes in with the baking soda. Watch as your balloon blows up.

Seeds in a Jar Germination:

SUPPLIES:

Fill the jar with paper towels.  Kids can fold them and push them down into the jar. This is also great work for little hands.Gently water your seed jar to wet the paper towels.  Carefully push seeds down into the paper towels around the edge of the jar so they can still be seen. Make sure they are firmly held in place.

Now you get to wait for the seeds to germinate. Watch for roots and hairs from the seeds to sprout. And shoot out and start to take shape. You can then plant them in seed pots or in the gound to grow when done.

SEED EXPERIMENT VARIATIONS

You can also explore how fast different seeds germinate by comparing different kinds of seeds under the same conditions.  We tried sunflower seeds, peas, and beans in our seed jar.

Or keep the type of seed the same and set up two mason jars to explore whether seeds need light to germinate.  Place one jar where it will get natural light and one in a dark cupboard.
