Happy Earth Day 2019 !

The theme for Earth Day 2019 is ‘Protect Our Species’. It aims to draw attention to the rapid extinction of species across the world, which is directly linked to human activity which causes climate change, deforestation and pollution. … Three bird species also went extinct that year.

Today’s Monday road trip : Bayou Tech

http://www.techeproject.org/about

Bayou Teche is on the federal list of impaired waterways because it can not support fish and wildlife propagation. By reducing pollution, mainly sewage and run-off, we can help restore habitat. We are are working to make Bayou Teche whole again through action and education about the ecology, culture and history.

Week of April 22, 2019: TECHE Project (in partnership with the Town of Port Barre, St. Landry Parish, Acadiana Native Plant Project, Bayou Vermilion Preservation Association and Trees Acadiana) will be implementing a bank-line restoration project at the Port Barre Trailhead.

This is my son helping to clean the Bayou Teche in Port Barre . The start of his love of the environment. He’s now a freshman in college study Environmental Science (water) at UL. So take your kids out and volunteer ! Lisa

Today, the Bayou Teche is cradled within the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area. Over 250 species of birds annually use this area, including tens of thousands of nesting herons, egrets, ibises and other wading birds. This region also annually hosts some of the highest nesting concentrations of Southern Bald Eagles, Red-Shouldered Hawks, Barred Owls, Acadian Flycatchers and Prothonotary Warblers in the United States. The American alligator along with 54 other species of reptiles and amphibians can also be found. Over 90 species of fish, crawfish, crabs, and shrimp support a thriving seafood industry.
