5 Steps to Ditching Dewey: Gentrification in Your Library

I don’t know about you but most people don’t know the Dewey decimal system in my small town. So ditching it sound like a good idea.

So I talked to a neighboring librarian and she gave me suggestions on book shelving for our small library. Lisa

Make the Move

From Dewey to our Current system is very easy since most of my items are donated. So we are starting from scratch from finding a Free book cataloging system to label books to putting them back on the shelves.

Choose Your Genre Categories

Categories of books include NA, YA, novels, and nonfiction, because they don’t communicate anything about the book’s content other than  whether it’s true or not, and sometimes the age range it’s meant for.

Genres of books say something about what the book is about. Sci-fi/fantasy, romance, memoir, biography, history, and mysteries are all designations that tell you on a basic level what a book is about.

Catalog Changes

Label the Books (and Weed)

I am Labeling the books with dots and stickers as well as book information on the binding. ( AR books are labeled with Stars) Children books (Smiley faces) Colored Dots for everything else. Making finding and shelving books easy.

We are weeding out the oldest books or torn book and giving them away or recycling them. We have a fun book game going on among volunteers on who finds the oldest book. ( 1954 so far) Lisa

I have a wall of large shelves -they go from Left to right with books.

 Signage

I am making shelf labels and signs for popular book series.
