NATIONAL OKLAHOMA DAY

National Oklahoma Day on June 7 recognizes the 46th state to be granted statehood.

The panhandled state of Oklahoma is a dotted series of granite mountain peaks, sloping sandstone ridges, rolling hills, and plains. In 1803, the land became part of the United States through the Louisiana Purchase.

n 1889, several counties in Oklahoma became open to settlement by Land Run. Settlers could claim quarter sections of land only after a specific time (usually noon) on a set date. Some eager settlers would cross the boundary into the county seeking their preferred quarter section sooner than the stroke of noon, earning them (and the state) the nickname “Sooners.”

But what I remember it most from the great Musical by the same name :

The Broadway  production opened on March 31, 1943. It was a box-office smash and ran for an unprecedented 2,212 performances,

Oklahoma! is the first musical written by the team of composer Richard Rodgers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II. The musical is based on Lynn Riggs’ 1931 play, Green Grow the Lilacs. Set in Oklahoma Territory outside the town of Claremore in 1906, it tells the story of farm girl Laurey Williams and her courtship by two rival suitors, cowboy Curly McLain and the sinister and frightening farmhand Jud Fry. A secondary romance concerns cowboy Will Parker and his flirtatious fiancée, Ado Annie.

Let’s Talk Food

The official state meal of Oklahoma consists of fried okra, cornbread, barbecue pork, squash, biscuits, sausage and gravy, grits, corn, strawberries (statefruit), chicken fried steak, pecan pie, and black-eyed peas.

  1. The official meal should be McDonalds. But these are some biscuit and gravy loving people here. And chicken fried steak with a gallon of cream gravy. I’ve never seen black eyed peas on a menu here. And they drink unsweetened tea!! This was fun.
