A Song of Joy * Book Review

A Song of Joy (Under Northern Skies Book #4

In Minnesota in 1911, Nilda Carlson is torn between society life in the city of Blackduck and spending time with her family back home on the farm. Her employer, Mrs. Schoenleber, gives her more and more responsibility and experience, including recommending new opportunities for her philanthropy. Still new to America herself, Nilda focuses on the area’s immigrant community, but she’ll have to fight to get her ideas accepted by the locals and donors alike.

In the meantime, one of her greatest joys is her weekly piano lesson with the handsome schoolteacher, Fritz. But just as Nilda is beginning to realize she has feelings for him, a stylish, affluent young woman moves to Blackduck and monopolizes Fritz’s attention. With her humble background, how can Nilda hope to compete with such a sophisticated beauty?

From the Inside Flap

George must have been watching for them. He greeted them in the drive and held the mare as Fritz hopped to the ground and gave Nilda a hand down. “I figured you’d gotten stuck in the rain shower,” George said.
“What was your first clue?” Fritz patted his wet shirt, making a slapping sound. “Please don’t wash the buggy. I know you want to. But have it ready for me after breakfast, please.”
“I shall.” George led the wet horse away.
Fritz escorted Nilda up onto the porch and paused. They stood facing each other, still close together. Nilda didn’t mind a bit. He broke into a broad smile. “You know, silly as it sounds, that was a lot of fun. Getting soaked and all. I loved it.”
“So did I.” Her smile matched his.
His grin faded. He slowly drew closer, as if he wanted to kiss her. Her breath caught.
Suddenly he stepped back. “Well. We should go dry off before we catch pneumonia.” He opened the door and ushered her inside.
A moment ago she had felt happy. Why did she suddenly feel cheated?|Lauraine Snelling is the award-winning author of more than 70 books, fiction and nonfiction, for adults and young adults.
