How far is too far for students to walk to school

?Most Safe Routes to School practitioners agree that a half mile is as far as most kindergarteners will walk happily, a mile is a reasonable length for older elementary school kids, and that 1.5 miles is an acceptable distance for high schoolers.

Why is safe routes to school important?

Safe Routes to School supports increased physical activity, helps form healthy habits that can last a lifetime, and decreases the risk of chronic disease and obesity. … Children who walk to school have higher levels of physical activity throughout the day.

Safety tips to follow on a walk to school include:

  • Parents should plan a safe route.
  • Don’t take shortcuts.
  • Young children should walk with an adult.
  • Older students should walk with a friend.
  • Don’t push, shove, or chase each other when near the street.
