Why is safe routes to school important?

Safe Routes to School supports increased physical activity, helps form healthy habits that can last a lifetime, and decreases the risk of chronic disease and obesity. … Children who walk to school have higher levels of physical activity throughout the day.

Safety tips to follow on a walk to school include:

  • Parents should plan a safe route.
  • Don’t take shortcuts.
  • Young children should walk with an adult.
  • Older students should walk with a friend.
  • Don’t push, shove, or chase each other when near the street.
