At the Library

At the Library : the theme for January is Mentorship ! Mentoring is important, not only because of the knowledge and skills students can learn from mentors, but also because mentoring provides professional socialization and personal support to facilitate success in graduate school and beyond. Quality mentoring greatly enhances students’ chances for success.

Do you Know what a Mentor is ?

Mentoring is a supportive learning relationship between a caring individual who shares knowledge, experience and wisdom with another individual who is ready and willing to benefit from this exchange, to enrich their professional journey

Below are three key roles that I’ve learned are important to the success of the mentor-mentee relationship.

What is the role of a mentor?

A mentor may share with a mentee (or protege) information about his or her own career path, as well as provide guidance, motivation, emotional support, and role modeling. A mentor may help with exploring careers, setting goals, developing contacts, and identifying resources

  • Role 1: Consultant. This is the most obvious role for a mentor to play. …
  • Role 2: Counselor. Listen. …
  • Role 3: Cheerleader.

Both mentors and mentees should utilize the following core skills in their mentoring part- nerships.

  • Listening Actively. Active listening is the most basic mentoring. …
  • Building Trust. …
  • Encouraging. …
  • Identifying Goals and Current.
  • Instructing/Developing Capabilities. …
  • Providing Corrective Feedback. …
  • Inspiring. …
  • Opening Doors.

Youth Mentoring:

Youth mentoring is the process of matching mentors with young people who need or want a caring, responsible adult in their lives. Adult mentors are usually unrelated to the child or teen and work as volunteers through a community-, school-, or church-based social service program.

Mentor Responsibilities

To assist youth in further developing his or her daily life skills such as self-confidence, self-esteem, academic excellence and moral values. To enable and help youth learn how to help him or herself and encourage him or her to make his or her own decisions and take responsibility for them.

Celebrating: Martin Luther Kings birthday with a day of service.

This picture book biography of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. brings his life and the profound nature of his message to young children through his own words.

Martin Luther King, Jr., was one of the most influential and gifted speakers of all time. Doreen Rappaport uses quotes from some of his most beloved speeches to tell the story of his life and his work in a simple, direct way. Bryan Collier’s stunning collage art combines remarkable watercolor paintings with vibrant patterns and textures. A timeline and a list of additional books and web sites help make this a standout biography of Dr. King.
