Welcome to my Home for the Holiday Addition:
Home for the holidays means heart felt gifts made from my home – Today’s projects Coffee Cup ( Mug) mats.
A coaster seats a cup and nothing more whereas a mug rug usually accommodates a mug and a cake or cookies. A mug rug is a mini quilt varying in size from 4” x 7” to as large as 12” x 8”. As such a quilter can fit more detail onto a mug rug and have more fun creating them . They can be simple as a block form ,appliqued, made from felt -they make the perfect gift for any occasion.
So gather your scraps or buy some cute holiday prints and get sewing. Need inspiration https://www.pinterest.com/pin/406731410082690454/?lp=true
Supplies Needed
- Fabric – 100% cotton, pre-washed and pressed
- Batting – Use a low loft
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Needles
- Cutting board
- Rotary cutter
- Quilting ruler
My son and I made this one. He free hand my pattern and I cut them out from Halloween scraps . Then layered with batting and quilted – and the mug mat was finished . We add the buttons but you may want to leave them off so that your cup sits flat.

Simple Color pages make great patterns to use for templates.
