Today is national Sewing Machine Day ?
Charles Fredrick Wiesenthal, a German-born engineer working in England was awarded the first British patent for a mechanical device to aid the art of sewing, in 1755. His invention consisted of a double pointed needle with an eye at one end. In 1790, the English inventor Thomas Saint invented the first sewing machine design, but he did not successfully advertise or market his invention
But My story is much newer. As a Child I learned from my Mom an avid sewer -who learned from her Mother. In our case -My Mom loved sewing and made all our clothes and most of her own..It saved money and she loved to being able to be creative . She latter worked from home at a local fabric store where she passed her knowledge on to the masses. And showed me it was okay to be a working Mom & How to balance a ,family and work life.
Her sewing influence showed up when I choose a college major & turn my mind to Home Ec and Fashion. I spent hours learning the art of cloth making.Which I turned into a career.
But I did put it aside for a while until later in life when I got introduced to quilting and home decor items. And found my passion again. I love making items I can share with others and give as gifts. Sewing is a life long Hobby, Pass it On.
So What is your Sewing story?
