It’s Time for – Ice Ice Baby !
Snow Balls, Snow Cones, Frozen Ice and Frozen Daiquiris time in Louisiana – are Summer to Everyone else.
Snow cones are a variation of shaved ice or ground-up ice desserts commonly served in paper cones or foam cups.[1] The dessert consists of ice shavings that are topped with flavored sugar syrup.
Depending on the region of North America, the terms “snowball” and “snow cone” may refer to different things. Where the distinction is made, the former refers to a dessert made of finely shaved ice (“like soft fresh snow”), while the latter contains ground-up ice that is coarser and more granular (“crunchy”). But In New Orleans they have there own – Sno-Ball !
A sno-ball is a New Orleans confection made with finely shaved ice and flavored cane sugar syrup. Commonly confused with the snow cone, the ice of a sno-ball is fine and fluffy; while a snow cone’s ice is coarse, crunchy, and granular. Moreover, in a snow cone the flavored syrup sinks to the bottom of the cup; while in a sno-ball the ice absorbs the syrup.
Sno-balls are a seasonal treat as they are generally sold only from roughly March to October. They are vended from “sno-ball stands” throughout New Orleans and in other parts of Louisiana and Mississippi.[1]
But if you need a little something with a kick – Drive Thru Daiquiris
Make at Home-
- Pour rum and lime juice into blender container.
- Add sugar and whirl to dissolve.
- Drop frozen berries into blender container, a few at a time, blending until smooth.
- Pour into chilled glasses.
That is one of the main things I miss about Louisiana…those drive through daiquiris! We used to head over from Bay St. Louis to Slidell every Friday evening and bring our own gallon jug!
